The Truth about Tap Water
In the western world, we’re fortunate to be able to turn on the tap and access unlimited water. However, many would question whether tap water is ultimately healthy. It may be deemed safe to drink by the World Health Organisation and other professional authorities, but ‘safe’ and ‘healthy’ are two different things. Given that it is treated with a large number of chemicals to kill bacteria and other pesky microorganisms, water running off the mains supply is vastly different to the sort found in nature – the kind found in springs and mountain streams which is rich in naturally-occurring minerals.
There are lots elements which can make their way into our water, from oestradiol, ACE inhibitors and lead traces to antibiotics, antidepressants and beta-blockers, so we’ll forego raking over old ground. Suffice to say that, with over 300 man-made chemicals having at some point been detected in British tap water, better options are available.
This is particularly the case if your tap water is fluoridated: about 10% of the UK population receive fluoridated water, including Cumbria, Cheshire, Tyneside, Northumbria, Durham, the West Midlands and most of Ireland. Indeed, many people now use a filter to eliminate not only fluoride but hardness, chlorine and other potentially dangerous toxins.

Tap water is safe in many places, but that doesn’t mean you’re not ingesting impurities.
Indeed, depending on where you live, you might be drinking bacteria, chemicals, and debris floating around in your municipality’s water system.
We take the safety of our water for granted, but accidents occur every year in which water unfit for human consumption is supplied to thousands of households. Concerns have been raised about pesticides and gender-bending chemicals in the water supply, and traces of hundreds of substances can be found in tap water. Excess amounts can damage our health and the effects of many remain undiscovered. What is really in our water, and how can we make sure it is as safe as possible?
1. Chlorine
Chlorine is added to water to make it safe because its toxicity kills bacteria and microbes that might otherwise make you sick.
We need chlorine in our water to prevent the spread of illnesses through drinking water.
But that doesn’t mean you want to drink the chlorine.
A study published in Epidemiology examined 141,000 births in Norway. The researchers found that children who lived in places where chlorine was added to the tap water experienced a 14% higher risk of having birth defects. Urinary tract abnormalities doubled.
Although many people do not like the taste and smell of chlorine, water companies insist that it is safer than dechlorinated water which is left sitting out at room temperature.
In large amounts, chlorine can be irritating to the skin as well as an eye, nose and lung irritant when exposure to the air is encountered. Ingestion of chlorine can cause stomach discomfort.
So while chlorination is the widely accepted way of cleaning water, it should still be filtered out before you drink it, particularly if you live in an area where trihalomethanes (THMs), developed by the combination of chlorine and organic matter, tend to fluctuate.

2. Fluoride
Many cities add fluoride to their water as a public health measure. But not everyone needs the extra fluoride.
In many towns & cities fluoride is added to water. However, long-term studies on the effects of fluoride claim that it can cause a multitude of health issues including cancer (specifically bladder), gum disease, thyroid dysfunction, kidney and liver disease, genetic defects, endocrine imbalance, nervous system disorders and bone disease including fluorosis.
Fluoride, which can occur naturally in water, helps strengthen children's teeth as they develop. But too much can cause fluorosis - an unsightly permanent brown mottling of the teeth. Because many toothpastes and mouthwashes already contain fluoride - and as children often swallow toothpaste - some experts argue that fluoridation of water supplies could increase the number of people potentially at risk of fluorosis. But Dr Clive Waterman, lecturer in dentistry at the GKT Dental Institute, says: 'At the optimal level of one part per million, fluoride reduces the chance of tooth decay. If it is in the water, there is 100 pc patient compliance, and it will get into children's developing adult tooth buds, thus producing stronger adult teeth. 'There is no convincing argument against fluoridating the water as far as I am concerned.'

3. Lead
Lead is another contaminant that can show up in your tap water. Old pipes, cost-saving measures, and disregard for public health can all lead to lead levels above the legal limit.
If we’ve learned anything from the Flint water crisis in Michigan, lead-contaminated water can be devastating to community health. Moreover, investigations into the affair have revealed that you can’t trust your local government to care for your water.
4. Nitrate
Nitrate forms naturally when nitrogen is combined with oxygen. All living things need nitrate, and it’s found in your drinking water. In fact, nitrate forms naturally at the surface, particularly in groundwater and well water.
However, when nitrate reaches high levels, it can be dangerous, particularly for pregnant women and children.
High levels of nitrate can be caused by fertilizers, industrial waste, septic systems, poor well construction, and the improper disposal of waste.

5. Organisms
The bacteria M. Avium paratuberculosis (MAP), a cousin of the tuberculosis germ, is found in farm animals in which it causes chronic intestinal inflammation. This microscopic organism is believed by some experts to be a cause of Crohn's disease, the debilitating human gut disorder.
Professor John Hermon-Taylor, at St George's Hospital, London, says: 'MAP bacteria are tough, harsh and can survive easily in the environment. Perhaps as many as 15 pc of animals are harbouring the bug, and without doubt it is leaching into the water supply through run off from land into rivers and ground water.'
He is convinced that the MAP bacteria are highly resistant to chlorination, and could possibly be responsible for up to 8,000 new cases of Crohn's every year. 'The probability that MAP is being conveyed to people in domestic water supplies is very high,' he warns.
The Drinking Water Inspectorate is now taking Professor Hermon-Taylor's claims seriously.
Deputy Director Owen Hydes says: 'We believe that MAP is adequately removed by filtration and disinfection. However, because the issue is not clear-cut - there is some suggestion that it might colonise in pipework – we do want to do more research.
Cryptosporidium, another parasite resistant to chlorination, occasionally causes outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness - potentially fatal for the old or those with a weak immune system. But Cryptosporidium can be removed from water with ceramic filters and distillation systems.
Water-transmitted viruses can carry infectious diseases. Hepatitis A, norovirus, and rotavirus can all be transmitted through water. In most cases, these viruses enter water through animal or human waste as well.

6. Heavy Metals
While trace elements of many metals (such as magnesium and selenium) are necessary for good health, some, like lead and aluminium, are not. Aluminium can occur naturally, but many water companies still treat water using aluminium sulphate. An accidental overdose of this chemical caused the infamous Camel ford water- contamination in 1988.

Both lead and aluminium poison the internal organs before settling in the brain and bones. Excess aluminium is widely believed to trigger Alzheimer's disease, which causes dementia as the brain is rapidly destroyed. Despite EU regulations limiting lead concentrations to 50 micrograms per litre (the equivalent of 250 grains of icing sugar), the Medical Research Council has concluded that there is no evidence of a safe level for lead. These and other metals with similar effects like silver, cadmium and mercury can be effectively removed by several methods including distillation.
These are the five most common types of water contamination. But what else can you find in your water?

7. Pesticides, Plastics and Pharmaceuticals
Since early studies highlighted how fish exposed to sewage effluents were changing sex, attention has been focused on the effects of these chemicals on human fertility, which has shown a marked decline over recent years. Though water companies operate under specific codes of practice to prevent plastic resins, cements and linings from leaching foreign substances into the supply, there have been several incidents where they have failed to prevent contamination.
Also under scrutiny are pesticides, which work their way into the ground and river systems from industry, agriculture and even households. These can mimic the action of hormones in the body, and are increasingly suspected as one factor lying behind the rising rates of hormone-related cancers in industrially developed nations.

What Can Be Done
Luckily, there are measures families can take to protect themselves.
First and foremost, bottled water can be used for drinking and cooking. This is expensive, though, and causes a large amount of waste without solving the problem of bathing.
